What to do if you feel sick?

Updated: Dec 20, 2024

Winter is Here! Though there’s no snow yet, the low temperatures and strong winds increase the chances of catching a cold.

In this blog there is info about:

What should you do if you suspect you’re unwell?

① Measure Your Temperature

In Japan, temperature is measured in Celsius. The normal body temperature is 36.6°C. If your temperature is above 37°C, there’s a chance you might be sick.

⚠️ A body temperature of 40°C (104°F) or higher can be dangerous and warrants immediate medical attention. In such cases, it's advisable to contact emergency medical services promptly.

② Inform the School (055-255-1100)

Your next step should be to notify the school. If it’s outside school hours, you can send a message via the school’s Facebook Messenger to inform your teacher about your absence in advance.

Tell your name, class, and reason for absence.

③ Visit a Doctor

In many cases, you can visit a general practitioner (内科医) without a prior appointment, but calling ahead is recommended.

What to bring and how to behave when visiting a doctor

Things you’ll need to bring:
  • Your health insurance card (valid and up-to-date; with insurance, you only pay 30% of the cost).

  • Your residence card (always carry it with you).

  • Any medications you’ve taken for self-treatment or those you’re currently prescribed.

At the Clinic:
  1. Submit your insurance card at the reception desk so the nurse can register you as a patient.

  2. Describe your symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, runny nose, headache, etc.).

  3. Wait for your turn to see the doctor. If you’re not confident in Japanese, prepare a translation app on your phone in advance.

  4. The doctor may prescribe you medication, which can only be purchased at a pharmacy with a prescription.

Some phrases you will use with the doctor:

はい、わかりました

Yes, I understand.

もう一度お願いします。

もう いちど おねがいします

Please repeat that.

日本語があまり分かりません。

にほんごが あまり わかりません

I don’t understand Japanese well.
