Finding job in Japan - HelloWork

Updated: Apr 1

When our students first arrive in Japan to study at CLAY, their sensei helps them find their first part-time job. However, with Graduation, many students face not only the challenge of moving but also the task of finding a part-time job on their own.

There are several ways to look for a job: online, in newspapers, or by checking the posters on the doors and windows of various cafés. However, there is another option – Japan's public employment service, HelloWork (ハローワーク).

HelloWork (ハローワーク) offices exist in almost every city, making it easy to visit and submit a job search application. Don't worry if you're not yet confident in reading kanji or speaking fluently. The employees at Hello Work will assist you in finding a job. Some HelloWork offices offer translation services, but not all.

How HelloWork Assists You

A Hello Work staff member will assist you in completing an application form, asking questions about your skills, preferred job type, available workdays, and hours. They will then print out a list of job offers for you on the spot. Additionally, you can register on the HelloWork website and search for job listings on your own (registration is only available in person).

Some companies recruit exclusively through HelloWork, meaning they only accept applications via this service. This could give you access to unique job opportunities or positions with higher hourly wages. Naturally, as a foreigner, the higher your Japanese language proficiency, the more job options will be available to you.

What You Need to Bring for the first time

Be sure to bring the following documents:

  • Your residence card

  • Student ID

  • Driver’s license (if you have one and are looking for a job that requires driving)

  • Japanese language proficiency certificate (if available)

  • Diploma from your previous educational institution (if available)

Work Hour Limitations for International Students

Remember that international students in Japan can work up to 28 hours per week. HelloWork will ensure that your future employer is aware of the Immigration Bureau's regulations regarding work hour restrictions for foreign students.
