Ms. Araki and Mr. Ishiyama from the Traffic Planning Division of the Yamanashi Prefectural Police Headquarters visited our school and gave a presentation on Japanese traffic rules.

Although they travel around the prefecture every day to conduct traffic safety classes in various places, this time they kindly offered a special lecture for our international students, using simple Japanese that was very clear and easy to understand.
They spoke slowly and clearly, sometimes adding a bit of humor, which made the session very enjoyable. Our students were able to learn with smiles throughout the class. Since most of our students commute to school by bicycle, the lecture focused mainly on bicycle traffic rules. The police lecturer emphasized several times that in Japan, a bicycle is considered closer to a car than to a pedestrian, yet still vulnerable to cars, so it is essential to follow safety rules carefully.
We also learned that Ms. Araki usually uses a ventriloquist puppet when giving traffic safety talks. This time, she gave the lecture without the puppet. If there is another opportunity, we would be delighted if she could bring Ken-chan, the puppet, as well.

To reinforce what they learned and to create a positive learning experience, the students received small gifts from the police officers: a reflective bracelet that can be attached to the wrist, a bag strap, or a backpack handle, as well as a clear file featuring traffic signs and explanations.
Ms. Araki and Mr. Ishiyama, thank you very much for your kindness and for teaching us important traffic rules. We will make sure to follow what we learned and continue to live safely here in Japan.
